Yoga therapist – as independent profession?

A while ago I wrote an article in Elephant Journal, and I put the unrevised one out here on the blog as the published one came out without my approval of the revision.

My engagement comes from a belief that yoga and the profession of yoga therapist has come to stay in health care.

My main points are, if you are a yoga teacher that want to share yoga with populations of certain needs, make sure to engage in acquiring the required competence. Either within health care, clinic or by supervision. There’s a growing number of better therapeutical advanced trainings, and International Association of yoga Therapy (IAYT) can give some orientation in this jungle.
Same goes other way around, health care personnel that are intrigued by mindfulness based approaches, engage in personal practice and please study more than a 8 – week MBSR course. There are also here many options for studying both in the academic direction and practical.
I so believe this is a growing profession, though for you engaged in it, it’s of big importance that we continue to discuss and give input to the requirements of the competence, and give feedback to the standards of this field. IAYT has recently published the revised standards, so things are definitely happening.
I’ m excited to see what the future brings, and as you can understand, I’m enthusiastic about this subject and believe many populations will benefit from yoga in both somatic and psychiatric settings as interdisciplinary treatment in times ahead.
Ok, so that was some Sunday thoughts on the subject. If you are interested in more one this, come visit Bodø Yogafestival 2014, where a whole day of newest research and yoga therapist from around the globe will meet for talks. I’ll publish some links to next years contributors coming week….
Enjoy!
